Abstract

The thesis discusses the main problems, of semantic, morphological and structural nature, connected with the establishment and development of multilingual thesauri and a possible model for multilingual access for the Nuovo soggettario. International standards, as ISO 5964 (1985), IFLA Guidelines for multilingual thesauri (2005), British standard 8723 for mono- and multilingual thesauri (2005), Guidelines AINSI/NISO Z39.19-200x (2005) for monolingual controlled vocabularies, and the MACS Project are examined. Some preferred terms of Nuovo Soggettario are compared with their equivalents in RAMEAU, LCSH and SWD: a great heterogeneity is inferred in terms treatment and respective hierarchical and associative relationships. It is thus preferable to provide multilingual access through modality of “linking” between interlinguistic equivalent terms, leaving out hierarchical and associative relationships, according to IFLA recommendations about the construction of not-symmetrical thesauri: an economic solution in terms of time, human and financial resources.
